STEMSOFT Selects Progress DataDirect for High Performance Data Connectivity in its Medical Informatics Software

BEDFORD, Mass., Feb 22, 2010 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Progress Software Corporation (NASDAQ: PRGS), a leading independent enterprise software provider that enables companies to be operationally responsive, today announced STEMSOFT Software Inc. has embedded the Progress® DataDirect Connect®for ADO.NET Entity Framework provider for the Oracle database in its cell-therapy manufacturing software. With full-feature Entity Framework support and 100 percent managed code architecture, the DataDirect Connect for ADO.NET data providers boost application performance and deliver a flexible, secure connection to Oracle, DB2, Sybase, and Microsoft SQL Server.

Additionally, the DataDirect Connect for ADO.NET data provider will be demonstrated at the 2010 Annual HIMSS Conference & Exhibition (booth #9051), March 1- 4, in Atlanta at the Georgia World Congress Center. Attendees will have an opportunity to learn more about how DataDirect Connect for ADO.NET can be used in the healthcare industry.

STEMSOFT provides end-to-end technology solutions for information management, quality assurance and regulatory compliance used by cellular therapy manufacturers, cord blood banks and clinical blood and marrow transplantation centers. STEMSOFT's products support the collection, processing, storage, distribution and analysis of high-quality cell therapy, gene therapy and immune therapy products and ensure FDA regulations are met.

Using the Entity Framework from Microsoft, STEMSOFT's products provide hospitals and research laboratories with an HL7-compliant interface for the exchange of information between systems. With most of its customers using either a Microsoft SQL Server database or Oracle database, STEMSOFT recognized an immediate need for reliable, high-performance database connectivity that could support heterogeneous database environments.

"Microsoft's decision to discontinue its System.Data.OracleClient driver, which provided access from .NET applications to Oracle databases, meant we needed to find a communication mechanism to support our Oracle users," said Piers Coleman, development manager and architect at STEMSOFT. "We sought a third-party provider that not only offered seamless support for Oracle databases, but had an established reputation working with and supporting the latest features and versions of the Entity Framework. Progress Software proved to be the standout vendor in the space."

Corporate IT departments at Fortune100 companies and leading independent software vendors (ISVs) use the DataDirect Connect for ADO.NET data provider to build reliable .NET applications that can connect to multiple databases while reducing the amount of code necessary to utilize database-specific features. Using 100 percent managed-code architecture, DataDirect Connect for ADO.NET eliminates the need for Oracle database client libraries - both instant and client. Because managed code runs in the Common Language Runtime (CLR) environment, it reduces risks such as memory leaks and closes security holes that unmanaged code leaves exposed, providing developers secure, reliable and versatile deployment options available in both application and client-server environments. This allows software developers and architects to avoid the versioning headaches associated with the ODP.NET provider and the multiple versions of the Oracle client libraries and databases used throughout the enterprise.

"STEMSOFT, like so many ISVs, faced a classic data connectivity dilemma - the need to ensure reliable connectivity to any platform, data source or application architecture while not wanting to deal with application code changes or keeping up with the latest provider features and database versions," said John Goodson, vice president and general manager of Enterprise Data Solutions at Progress Software. "Using the data provider from Progress DataDirect, STEMSOFT can easily support the latest features provided by the Entity Framework and bring products to market faster."
