Progress Software Releases New Version of DataXtend Semantic Integrator

Feb 19, 2008
Progress Software Releases New Version of DataXtend Semantic IntegratorBEDFORD, Mass.– February 19, 2008 – Progress Software Corporation (NASDAQ: PRGS), a global supplier of application infrastructure software used to develop, deploy, integrate and manage business applications, today announced the availability of ProgressÒ DataXtendÒ Semantic Integrator (SI) 8.3. This release enables Communication Service Providers to more effectively synchronize their disparate and distributed data with new change data capture (CDC) functionality, which determines when data has changed in a database.

DataXtend SI addresses the challenge of data interoperability in environments based on service-oriented architectures (SOA), bringing the same agility to data that SOA does to processes.  DataXtend SI uses a common model to mediate the differences between the data models of applications and services.  Used by Communication Service Providers worldwide, DataXtend SI reduces the time and cost required to integrate OSS (Operational Support Systems) and BSS (Business Support Systems) in order to support the delivery of new service offerings.

Version 8.3 of DataXtend SI features new capabilities to mediate the flow of data between databases using the common model in the same way that it mediates between services. Deployed within an organization’s Enterprise Service Bus (ESB), such as Progress SonicÔ ESB, DataXtend provides non-intrusive change data capture at the data source and applies identified changes to target databases in the appropriate formats, synchronized with the master data.

“The need for data interoperability, especially within the communication service provider industry, is more critical today than ever,” said Ken Rugg, VP and General Manager, DataXtend, Progress Software. “Service Providers are using SOA for the agility to roll out new revenue generating services quickly in a heterogeneous environment while evolving their systems to adopt more off-the-shelf software and reduce redundancy. Their data infrastructure needs the agility to match. The common model approach along with change data capture gets the data where it needs to be, in the format the application requires.”

Recently, Stewart Welbourne, Enterprise Architect for BT, echoed the importance of data consistency across the enterprise and commented:  "Integrating data in SOA is a lot more than just ensuring that data is provided to each system in a format it can understand syntactically…implementing an SOA without a semantic integration dimension will result in significant fall-out and costly iteration." Welbourne continued with the point that XML schemas “often used to overcome data disparity among systems are limited in their abilities to deal with semantic differences and to enforce consistency across systems… [and that] the industry needs to evolve beyond such single-use fixes to repeatable enterprise solutions.”

Currently, Progress DataXtend Semantic Integrator 8.3 supports Oracle databases as data distribution sources. Future releases will support additional commercially available databases.
